Engineering Classroom Ambassadors Program

This new program develops teacher capacity to apply the NGSS science and engineering practices by working with a UCI engineering classroom ambassador who can co-construct authentic engineering experiences and develop students’ engineering habits of mind. The Engineering Ambassador also serves as a content expert with rich industry skills, who can work with students to build their confidence, capacity and identity in STEM.

COMMITTMENT

  • Supporting high school science teachers’ specific instructional needs to align to the Next Gen Science Standards.
  • Building teachers’ capacity in implementing NGSS science and engineering practices through real-world applications and projects.
  • To foster 21st century skills and knowledge for students through consistently classroom interactions and experiences with engineers from UCI.

EXPERIENCE

  • Each teacher will define their specific needs and goals for implementing the NGSS framework (specifically the SEPs).
  • Engineering Ambassadors will be carefully matched with teachers based on current teacher needs, goals, and level of engineering implementation.
  • With monthly support from UCISP and NASA for the entire school year, teachers and ambassadors will work together to provide students with authentic and engaging engineering experiences to support NGSS alignment.

Meet Ambassadors & Teachers

  • Mr. Adam Woods

Mr. Adam Woods is an engineering teacher for SAUSD and worked closely with Mr. Laron for the pilot stage of this program. Mr. Woods currently works with engineering ambassador Ms. Lieng.

Mr. Woods is moving into his 16th year of Science & Engineering teaching at Segerstrom High School in Santa Ana, CA. Over the past 7 years, he has worked to develop and maintain his school’s CTE PLTW Aerospace Engineering pathway. Adam is an avid enthusiast of Education’s intersection with Engineering, Technology, Career Connections, Environmental Science and Equity.

  • Ms. Amanda Lieng

Ms. Amanda Lieng is a UCI undergraduate engineering student working with Mr. Woods at SAUSD as an engineering ambassador for ’21-’22 school year.

Ms. Lieng is currently a junior at UCI, pursuing a BS in Computer Engineering. She has picked up skills from classes, programs, and projects including IBM Accelerate Software Program, UCI HyperXite Project Team, and SIRiPods Research Program. In her spare time, she enjoys solving jigsaw puzzles, reading books, and exploring campus. She is excited to inspire students to become passionate about STEM.

  • Mr. Jaeven Laron

Mr. Jaeven Laron was a UCI undergraduate engineering student who worked closely with Mr. Woods at SAUSD as the engineering classroom ambassador in 2020-2021.

Mr. Laron recently graduated from UCI with a BS in Computer Engineering and is currently a solutions engineering analyst at Deloitte. He’s been able to develop his hardware and software skills through various coursework and senior design projects including quadcopter design and manufacturing, UCI Cubesat, and his senior team’s solar electric bike. Besides that, he enjoys video games, driving to new places, and long walks on the beach.

  • Ms. Vicky Lieu

Ms. Vicky Lieu is a science teacher from GGUSD, and she worked closely with Ms. Rangel to pilot this program and into the program’s second year.

Vicky has taught chemistry, physics and AP Physics 1 for several years at Santiago High School. She currently serves as the advisor for Club of Sciences, AP Sciences Club, Class of 2024, as well as a site coordinator for the school’s science and engineering fair projects. She is super excited to be a part of the UCI Engineering Ambassador Program and can’t wait to pass on the passion and love of science and engineering to students with her ambassador. She strongly believes that student success is dependent on them asking questions.

  • Mr. Kevin Dwyer

Kevin Dwyer is a Physics and Engineering teacher at Cypress High School in the Anaheim Union High School District.  He is currently in his 28th year of teaching.

Prior to teaching Kevin worked in the Aerospace industry for 8 years as a Structural Engineer on the Air Force’s C-17 cargo plane.  Feeling a call to help students prepare for STEM careers, he switched careers and began teaching math.  Ten years later he started teaching Physics (math with toys!).  In the last three years Kevin has launched the Engineering Career pathway at Cypress, establishing a new class each year in the pathway, culminating in Aerospace Engineering. A few years ago he was able to fly on NASA’s SOFIA airplane as an Airborne Astronomy Ambassador.

  • Ms. Anganette Cisneros

Anganette Cisneros is a fourth-year biomedical engineering-premedical student at the University of California, Irvine with a passion for innovation and healthcare.

She currently serves on the board of the campus organization The Patient Project and serves as an Engineering Ambassador for the UCI Science Project. After graduation, she plans to apply to dental school and practice as an oral maxillofacial surgeon.

Thank you to our amazing collaborators!
